Writers, Embrace the Pronouns!

I’ve noticed a little trend with aspiring writers. They don’t use pronouns.

Instead, they’ll write their characters’ names over and over again, but repeating any word gets annoying and distracting. Pronouns make our writing smoother and better, and honestly, repeating the same noun is tiresome.

Many times, I see this:

Mark and Joanna walked to the park. Mark grabbed Joanna’s hand, and Joanna smiled.

See how the repetition is distracting? Now take a look with pronouns:

Mark and Joanna walked to the park. He grabbed her hand, and she smiled.

That’s better. It’s smoother. I know he is Mark and she is Joanna. Any other reader will know that too. We speak with pronouns all the time, so don’t be afraid to use them in your writing.
